Letters to the Editor
Soli Sorabjee has echoed the sentiments of all right-thinking Indians by saying that no signal of celebrity justice delivery system should go to the people because of the support Sanjay Dutt is getting from Bollywood and some Congress leaders. As one hailing from an affluent family, Sanjay was under no economic or social compulsion to hobnob with the Mumbai underworld. He only got what he deserved.
T.S. Pattabhi Raman,
It is surprising that Union Minister Kapil Sibal has taken undue umbrage at Mr. Sorabjee’s advice. As a noted lawyer, he should know that the only recourse a person has against any perceived miscarriage of justice is appeal in a higher court. It does not behove a man of his eminence to air his sympathy for Sanjay publicly just because he is a celebrity and friend. Is it his contention that the rest of the convicted deserve their sentences and Sanjay alone deserves sympathy?
Subramanyam Sridharan,
Bollywood, a powerful lobby, is exerting its influence to secure a lighter punishment for Sanjay. Two Ministers have already aired their views in his support. Such tendencies will send a wrong signal to offenders to continue their nefarious activities and the honest people may feel disheartened. Let the Supreme Court, and not people at the helm, decide Sanjay’s fate.
V.S. Davey,
