Letters to the Editor
On reading the report ‘Devadas Gandhi dead’ (This Day That Age, Aug. 4), I was reminded of a related incident. An express telegram was sent to Rajaji from Bombay saying Devadas was critically ill. But it was not delivered to Rajaji. Devadas died the following day. On reaching Bombay, Rajaji learnt about the telegram. He wrote a postcard to Major P.K.S. Chari, Post-Master General, Madras, expressing his anguish over the non-delivery of the telegram. The telegram was found lying in the telegraph office undelivered, marked ‘addressee not known’ as it was addressed to Rajaji, T. Nagar, Madras. The PMG was profusely apologetic and explained that although Rajaji was well known, the telegraph messenger did not relate to him and hence the lapse. Rajaji responded by saying it was not the mistake of the postal department but was that of the sender.
