Letters to the Editor
I fully agree that providing separate spaces for women is not the answer to their harassment on trains and buses (Aug. 6). It only lends credence to the view that girls should be confined to places reserved for them. To separate women from the crowd in the name of safety would mean according legitimacy to the actions of those who harass them. For a section that constitutes 50 per cent of the population, you cannot provide protection by providing separate spaces. Efforts should be made to broaden people’s outlook and make them appreciate that women have equal rights to share space with men. But separate spaces do make women who are less exposed to the outside world overcome their inhibitions.
