Dadasaheb Phalke Award goes to Shyam Benegal

NEW DELHI: Shyam Benegal, considered among the pioneers of new Indian cinema, will get the 2005 Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
The award, which carries a cash component of Rs. 2,00,000, a Swarna Kamal and a shawl, will be conferred on him by the President later this year.
The announcement of this award was delayed because of the court battle involving the National Film Awards, 2005. Normally, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award is announced soon after the film awards and presented at the same function. The announcement was made on Wednesday; a day after the Government released the film awards for 2005. Mr. Benegal broke new ground with his very first film ‘Ankur’ in 1973. Since then, he had made 24 feature films, several documentaries and television serials.
His repertoire includes ‘Manthan,’ ‘Bhumika,’ ‘Junoon,’ ‘Kalyug,’ ‘Mandi,’ and ‘Trikal,’
‘Suraj Ka Satwan Ghoda,’ ‘Mammo,’ ‘Sardari Begum,’ ‘The Making of the Mahatma’ and ‘Zubeida.’
Currently a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, the 72-year-old film-maker has been the Chairman of the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune.
