School to be run entirely by farmers selected from that particular block ATMA to grant all necessary inputs worth Rs 51,000 for demonstration farm
Sangareddy: Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) of Medak district, established to fill the gaps in agriculture technology at field level, would be organising farmer schools in 12 blocks from this year’s rabi season. Each farmer school would be run entirely by a farmer selected from that particular block. The farmer has to contribute one hectare of his land and his spare time. ATMA would grant all necessary inputs worth Rs 51,000 required for the demonstration farm. The farmer would be responsible for organising classes for other farmers from the same block. Studies on sweet sorghum
Speaking to The Hindu the assistant project director of ATMA here M.Raghuram Reddy said that studies on sweet sorghum, potato and ginger have been taken up at the agricultural research station in Basanthpur of Zaheerabad mandal unde r Assessment and Refinement of Technology programme. He said that efforts are being made to increase the productivity of sweet sorghum as farmers in the district are currently facing low productivity problem leading to losses. Study tours
The research work in ten acres of land would try to improve the quality of the famous Zaheerabad ginger, which was pitted against high quality Kerala ginger. Even though ATMA could only spend half of Rs. 34 lakh granted by the union Government last year, the project director’s office here hopes to improve the record this financial year. It has requested for Rs 2.46 crore for this financial year. Attributing the problem to the inertia at block level committees, Raghu Ram Reddy said that the concept did not encourage involvement of officers from the district headquarters. The Medak ATMA so far organised three exposure visits for its farmers. A selected group of 17 farmers have been sent to Delhi to attend the Krishi Expo there and a visit to the Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI) at Pusa. Two more groups have been sent to Hyderabad and Surat to study new trends in animal husbandry. With the farmers showing interest in latest agricultural inputs and animal husbandry the ATMA is planning organise study tours for shepherds.
