Druggists’ body splits

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: The tussle that started with the disclosure of fake drugs being sold in south Orissa by some members has led to a rebellion against the office-bearers of Ganjam Phulbani Chemists and Druggists’ Association (GPCDA).

Three hundred members of the GPCDA formed an action committee to hold a general body meeting in the city on Wednesday.

They formed a parallel committee electing 30 zonal executives along with ten invited members. S. Surendra Patra, the convener of the action committee, said the tenure of the office-bearers of the GPCDA had ended on May 2 and they had to call upon a general body meeting to elect a new body within three months which they have not done.

Meanwhile three members of the GPCDA were also suspended from the association in connection with the issue. It divided the association into two groups.

Action sought

The meeting mainly discussed the problem of sale of spurious drugs in market and the inaction of the office-bearers of GPCDA to stop it. The members asked the State Government to check spurious drugs at manufacturers’ level through intensive investigation and strict action.

Most of the members raised questions why the governing body of College of Pharmaceutical Sciences (CPS) at Mohuda was not placing its accounts before the executive committee of the GPCDA for approval.

Even the accounts regarding the expenses during the president’s visit to the institution last year were yet to be placed before the executive committee of GPCDA for approval. It was alleged that the funds collected from the management quota seats of the institution had not reached GPCDA since 1996. The CPS is a sister concern of the GPCDA.
