Chief Minister asks officials to go to rescue of flood-hit

Reviews the situation at a high-level meeting

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday reviewed the situation that had arisen in several districts due to heavy rains and floods and directed the authorities to take immediate measures to extend help to the affected people.

Torrential rains under the influence of a deep depression had inundated most parts of Cuttack city, low-lying areas of Bhubaneswar and caused flash floods the districts of Rayagada, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Jagatsinghpur.

Presiding over a high-level meeting on his return from New Delhi, Mr. Patnaik ordered that steps be taken for reconstruction of the bridge over Banshadhara river near Buguda in Rayagada that had collapsed to due to floods on Tuesday.

Till the bridge was reconstructed, the meeting decided that immediate measures would be taken to improve the alternative road via Khilarmunda and Gunupur.

The collapse of the bridge has affected road communication between Rayagada and Berhampur.

In another major decision, the meeting decided that the families of those who had been killed due to lightning be paid an ex gratia of of Rs. 50,000 each.

The State government will make funds available for the purpose.

The meeting also decided that necessary measures be taken to repair the road and communications network without delay.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister and others attended.
