KUMBAKONAM: One of the copper ‘kalasams’ of the rajagopuram of Sri Adhikumbeswaraswamy Temple here fell down on Tuesday.
The nine-floor rajagopuram has nine ‘kalasams.’ Each one is five ft high and weighs 25 kg. Temple authorities said that the ‘kalasam,’ second from the southern side, might have fallen down, owing to heavy wind, which normally occurs during Aadi.
The last kumbabishekam to the rajagopuram was performed in 1999. The gopuram was renovated but the ‘kalasams’ were not removed. As they are old ones, they were kept as such. Now, all the ‘kalasams’ would be removed after Balalayam and renovated and reinstalled, they said.
