TAMBARAM: A breach in the bund of the Hasthinapuram lake, encroachments on channels and stagnation of rainwater contaminated with sewage are among the problems facing residents of four localities in Nemilichery near Chromepet. For the past few days, rainwater contaminated with sewage has been stagnating in Muthuswamy Nagar, Kannammal Nagar, R.K.Nagar and Somu Nagar, all of which come under the Pallavaram municipality. With Palar water supply restricted only to a few pockets, most residents have been drawing contaminated water from their surface and borewells. While some afford bottled water, others are forced to consume the contaminated water after filtering and boiling it. Rainwater run-off from areas as far as Kakkalanchavady near the Chromepet Government Hospital and nearby areas finds its way into the Hastinapuram lake through a series of drains. And surplus water from it would drain into lakes in Nanmangalam and Keelkattalai through channels that have now been blocked by obstructions and encroachments. Owing to the discharge of sewage, the Hasthinapuram lake has been polluted to a large extent. And for the past few days, contaminated water gushed out of the lake and stagnated around houses in these four localities, affecting quality of water in over 200 surface and borewells, said P. Balakrishnan, president of M.R.S.K. Residents’ Welfare Association. Office-bearers of this association have been maintaining a bagful of records, letters and petitions sent to officials at various levels of the government requesting their intervention, but there has been no help. “We have got used to it, we have no other option,” remarked Pandian, a resident. A portion of the lake bund was damaged two years ago, reportedly by miscreants to let out water to protect encroachers’ property inside the water body. And the Kancheepuram district administration’s response has been cold, residents of R. K.Nagar charged. V.Kalidas, secretary of the association, demanded removal of obstructions on water channels, plugging of the breach on the lake bund and effective and sustained measures in order to prevent stagnation of sewage in their locality.
