Gorakhpur V-C sentenced to imprisonment

Lucknow: Taking a serious view of non-compliance of its orders to pay arrears to a lecturer, the Allahabad High Court has sentenced the Vice-Chancellor of Gorakhpur University, Arun Kumar, to two months’ simple imprisonment.

The Lucknow Bench of the Court also sentenced the Registrar and Deputy Registrar of the university, S. C. Sharma and A. K. Pal, to one month’s simple imprisonment.

A single bench headed by Justice D. P. Singh passed the order on a contempt petition moved by a lecturer in the Botany Department of the university, V. N. Pandey, who had claimed that the university administration had failed to clear his arrears despite orders by the Court.

The Court has also imposed a fine of Rs. 50,000 on the V-C and Rs. 25,000 each on Mr. Sharma and Mr. Pal. The bench directed that the fine be realised as land dues by the district administration if it was not paid by the trio within the stipulated time.

Directing them to present themselves before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Lucknow by August 10, the Court has ordered issuance of non-bailable warrant in case they fail to turn up. - PTI
