Forum justifies Ranganath Mishra Commission’s recommendation for extending quota benefits.
Thiruvananthapuram: The Council of Dalit Christians (Kerala), a forum of Dalit Christian organisations and representatives of churches, has described as deplorable the threat by some sections to resort to self-immolation if the benefits being enjoyed by the Scheduled Castes are extended to the Dalit Christians and the Dalit Muslims on the basis of the Ranganath Mishra Commission’s report. The Council pointed out in a resolution that it was the Supreme Court which appointed the Commission in connection with a public interest litigation on the issue filed in 2004. The Commission had made a detailed study of the issue through affidavits submitted to it and by holding seminars in various States. It had strongly recommended extending of benefits enjoyed by SCs to Dalit Christians and Muslims. The Commission found that conversion had not brought any progress socially, economically or educationally to these sections and they were being subjected to caste discrimination, it added.
