Court allows Shahabuddin to vote

Legal Correspondent

Mohd. Shahabuddin

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Mohd. Shahabuddin, MP, serving his sentence in the Siwan district jail in Bihar, to vote in the Vice-Presidential election in the Parliament House on August 10.

Police escort

A three-Judge Bench of Justices B.N. Agrawal, Tarun Chatterjee and V.S. Sirpurkar directed the jail superintendent to provide him sufficient police escort to come here and cast his vote. It also asked the Bihar Director General of Police and the Delhi Police Commissioner to make appropriate security arrangements.

Travel cost

It made it clear that the petitioner would have to bear the travel cost.

Earlier, senior counsel Ranjit Kumar appearing for Shahabuddin, brought to the notice of the court that the High Court could not take up the petition seeking permission to exercise his franchise.

Counsel said if the petitioner was not allowed to vote, the entire constituency would go unrepresented in the election.
