Students of city school win ‘Ignite-07’

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Two students from Alpha Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Saidapet, bagged the first prize in the Ignite-07 competition conducted for schoolchildren across south India.

V. Atchara and K. Preethi got the prize for their device which calculated the oxygen capacity of the lungs. They received the prize at the valedictory of Ignite-07, held at IIT here on Wednesday. The second place went to B. Aravindhan and his team from Sir M.Ct.M. School, Purasawalkam. The team had designed a white cane fitted with sound, light and object sensors that signalled (through vibrations) to the person holding the stick when it came across an obstacle.

The third place went to students from Bharatiya Vidhya Bhawan, Hyderabad, for a device that could help archaeologists sift through the dust with more ease during excavations.

The awards were presented by Ashok JhunJhunwala, professor, TeNet Group, IIT Madras. Addressing the students, Dr. JhunJhunwala said that while this was a great time to be growing up in India there were still challenges that the country had to overcome.

“The biggest challenge is to bring those left behind forward… requiring strong innovation. This is your responsibility and innovation is your only tool. Pass this message to your friends and encourage them also to innovate,” he said.

Anil K. Gupta, Executive Vice-Chairperson, National Innovation Foundation, Ahmedabad, chief guest of the event and judge of the competition, urged the students to continue their good work. “You should aspire to become successful technicians, scientists and entrepreneurs,” he said.
