Protester suffers miscarriage

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Although it was claimed that two women had suffered miscarriages when workers of a garment factory and the police clashed at Peenya in Bangalore on Wednesday, the identity of only one woman has been confirmed so far.

She has been identified as Vishala by members of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike. Authorities at the K.C General Hospital, who did not want to be quoted, said that a pregnant woman was brought to the hospital along with the other injured workers but as her condition worsened, she was immediately shifted to a private nursing home by her family members. Ms. Vishala had conceived for the first time after being married for nine years, according to her colleagues.

Vimala Patil, a doctor at the K.C General Hospital, Malleswaram, told The Hindu that the admitted women had been beaten with batons, “It is obvious from the wounds.” she said. Of the 13 women who were admitted, two were discharged after first aid, Dr. Patil said.

Nanjundaiah, a member of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, said the information about the court order on the 300-metre radius from the factory being made a restricted area had not been conveyed to workers. “It was all planned… They (police) waited for us to enter the and then pounced upon us,” he said. The workers claimed that only two policewomen were present.
