Schoolchildren to put up about 20 frames Winners of silver medal and above will qualify for the national-level contest
BANGALORE: Nearly 500 frames containing over 1.5 lakh stamps will be on display at the three-day State level philatelic exhibition at Jnanajyothi Auditorium in Central College campus beginning from Friday. Chief Postmaster General of Karnataka Circle Meera Datta told presspersons here on Wednesday that about 20 frames were being put up by schoolchildren, including those from Vijaya School, Frank Anthony Public School, Ebenezer International School, and St. Aloysius School in the city. The stamps will be on the themes such as Mahatma Gandhi, women, science and technology sports, space, astronomy, endangered species, festivals, flora and fauna. Renowned philatelists such as Sita Bhateja and Pradip Jain will bring their collections on Great Britain and pre-Independence India and Kusum Mehta will bring collection on Morhi – former Indian State of Saurastra. Winners of silver medal and above in Karnapex 2007 would be eligible to participate in the national exhibition to be held in Chennai from January 2, Ms. Datta said. Three special covers on the themes Heritage Day, Akshara Day and Post Day would be released on the three days in that order. Buyers could get cancellation of the fees seal (stamps and covers without cancellation have no philatelic value). To encourage children to take philately, the department has organised a spot painting competition, handwriting competition and a quiz on the three days in that order. Already, there were 600 entries in each of the categories, Ms. Datta said. Four frames showing handwritten letters of writers such as Kuvempu and Dattatreya Bendre would be exhibited. The exhibition would be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Entry is free. The exhibition will feature sale of T-shirts with imprints of stamps, stained glasses with stamps handicrafts bearing pictures of stamps and stamp art products made by Nirmal paintings group of Andhra Pradesh. About 10 dealers from throughout the country would sell stamps. Ms. Datta said the Department of Posts would release First War of Independence stamps on Thursday. In the pipelines were stamps on architectural heritage of Indian Railways, butterflies of Andaman and Nicobar.
