VOICING THEIR DEMAND: Members of the Centre for Indian Trade Union staging a protest in Dindigul on Wednesday.
THENI: Over 600 members of the Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU) were arrested on Wednesday when they attempted to picket roads at six places in the district, demanding effective functioning of the Labour Welfare Board and implementation of the social security scheme for labourers in the unorganised sector. More than 450 persons were arrested in Theni town when they picketed Theni-Cumbum main road. They appealed to the Government to take immediate steps to implement labour welfare schemes. Road picketing was done at Cumbum, Periakulam, Andipatti, Bodi and Goodalur. Women arrested
A total of 1,587 CITU members, including 390 women, were arrested when they attempted to picket road at five places in the district as part of a nationwide stir for upgrading functions of the Labour Welfare Board. The cadres picketed roads in Dindigul, Palani, Oddanchatram, Chinnalapatti and Batlagundu. In Dindigul, they staged a demonstration before the head post office and picketed the post office road. The protesters appealed to the State Government to extend all benefits offered by the welfare board to the labourers immediately. They were arrested and later released. In Ramanathapuram, more than 1200 CITU workers were arrested at nine places. The police prevented them when they tried to picket roads in towns including Ramanathapuram, Paramakudi, and Thiruvadanai. They shouted slogans demanding enactment of special law to protect unorganised sector workers. About 548 women were among those arrested. Later, they were released. In Sivaganga district, 270 cadres, including 68 women, were arrested when they indulged in road roko in five centres including Sivaganga, Karaikudi, Thirubuvanam and Devakottai. In Madurai, over 1,500 members were arrested in eight places when they tried to picket roads. Among them were around 600 women. Madurai MP, P. Mohan and Madurai East MLA N. Nanmaran addressed the gathering. The protests were also held at Tirupparankundram, Melur, Tirumangalam, Usilampatti, Samayanallur, Sholavandan, Othakadai and Peraiyur. Hundreds of workers affiliated to CITU were arrested in Virudhunagar district when they tried to block roads at 12 places. District unit leader Muthuvel participated in the dharna at Aruppukottai.
