CHENNAI: Bharat Sevak Samaj (BSS), an agency promoted by the Centre, has launched a national vocational education mission. Under the project, the BSS will train one crore people by 2020 through one lakh vocational training centres all over the country, BSS general secretary B.S. Balachandran told mediapersons here recently.
Zonal project officer S.A.G. Moison said that out of the one lakh vocational training centres, 50,000 would be upgraded as community colleges.
At present, the vocational courses are offered as package courses of certificate level for one- or two-year duration.
Stand alone courses are available in combination with academic courses , a BSS strategy vision paper said.
The BSS also provides opportunities for learners to choose certain vocational subjects in combination with academic subjects at both secondary and senior secondary levels. There is a blending of vocational courses with the academic courses to enable learners to make a choice on pursuing both or one of the streams. Certain vocational courses are offered independently or in combination with academic subjects at the secondary and the senior secondary levels, the vision paper added.
