TIRUCHI: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has urged the State Government to curb untouchability with a stern hand and initiate stringent action against those indulging in the evil practice. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the untouchability eradication conference organised by the Tiruchi district unit of the party at Manapparai near here on Tuesday. The resolution said atrocities against the oppressed sections were being committed in various forms. A total of 38 committees nominated by the district unit of the party to conduct a survey of the untouchability menace prevailing in the rural areas found that this evil practice was in vogue in about 255 villages. “The Dalits were not allowed to use the public thoroughfares and in many places they were denied entry into cremation grounds. The elected Dalit representatives were not allowed to function independently.” A delegation of the party presented a memorandum containing the findings of the above teams to the district authorities in April, but no action had been initiated so far to render justice. The resolution called upon progressive democratic and secular masses to force the Government to put an end to the menace. “Fulfil poll promise”
Another resolution called upon the Government to fulfil its poll promise of providing lands to the tillers, particularly to the dalits. The land thus provided should be given as joint patta in the name of both husband and wife. Taking into consideration the rise in the population of the Scheduled Caste people in the State, the Government should increase reservation for them from the present 19 per cent to 20 per cent, another resolution said. The Arundadiyar community was extremely backward and the Government must conduct a survey to understand the problems confronting them. The Arundadiyars should be provided inner reservation. The meeting complained that the funds earmarked for developing the Dalit areas were not being utilised. The Government should take a special initiative to monitor the spending. The meeting also demanded house site pattas to all the deserving people. The veteran CPI-M leader and party’s Central Committee member, N. Sankaraiah, who was the chief guest at the conference, appealed to the Government to eradicate untouchability at all costs and protect the interests of the downtrodden community. He urged all the political parties to prevail upon their followers to strive for social equity. He said the CPI-M-led West Bengal Government had initiated various steps for the empowerment of the Dalits. Free lands had been provided to them and the village panchayats accorded more powers. The State secretariat member, P. Sampath, the State committee member, G. Rethinavelu, the secretary of the district unit of the party, S. Sridharan, were among the speakers.
