‘Carbon capture’ urged for thermal stations

Special Correspondent

State advised to use technology on pilot basis

HYDERABAD: Director, Earth Institute of Columbia University, US, Jeffrey Sachs, has advocated use of “carbon-capture and storage” (CCS) technology for coal-based thermal power stations to minimise the ill-effects of global warming.

Early stage

Making a presentation on this technology to Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh in the Secretariat on Wednesday, Dr. Jeffrey asked the State Government to consider taking up a pilot project to use this technology to reduce carbon presence in the atmosphere. The CCS, however, was in the early stage even in the US and Europe. He said under this technology, carbons, ejected out by the thermal power stations, would be captured and injected into the earth to avoid pollution in the atmosphere. The carbons could not be injected into oceans as waters lacked sufficient absorbing capacity.

In his response, the Chief Minister assured Dr. Jeffrey of whatever cooperation needed from the State Government.

Dr. Nirupam Bajpai, director, South Asia Programme, Jureg Matter, scientist, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Dr. Jonathan Schrag, executive director, Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy, and K. V. P. Ramchandra Rao, advisor to Government ( Public Affairs), were present along with senior officials.
