Crest gates of all the dams opened

49 of Jurala’s 62 gates lifted Two lakh cusecs of water released
HYDERABAD: Crest-gates of all the dams across the Krishna in the State were opened again on Wednesday following heavy inflows from the upper reaches.
This is the second time this season that a heavy discharge is being made through spillways of the four projects across the Krishna--Srisailam, Jurala, Nagarjunasagar and Prakasam Barrage. The authorities, however, are letting out the water from these projects only after filling the gaps left in the reservoirs following the depletions made so far either for irrigation purpose or power generation.
Low-lying areas alerted
Two lakh cusecs of water was released from Jurala where 49 out of the project’s 62 gates were lifted. The authorities alerted low-lying areas of the Krishna with a view to opening the gates of Srisailam to allow this huge quantity to flow down without hindrance. Similarly, 14 out of 26 gates of Nagarjunasagar were lifted.
As Prakasam Barrage, the last harnessing point of the Krishna, lacks sufficient holding capacity, all this water is being released into the sea.
The Godavari too began to rise. Nearly three lakh cusecs is being discharged into the sea from Dowlaiswaram anicut.
