Full throttle: Sania Mirza is on a roll.
HYDERABAD: The dream run of Sania Mirza in Los Angeles where she recorded a fabulous win against Martina Hingis was not a surprise to her parents – Imran and Nasima. They attribute the latest success story of Sania to her new-found mental toughness and great determination o be a better player with each passing day. Stunning results
“Can you believe that giving Sania company till now was only her mother (Spanish coach Gabriel Urpi joined them only in Los Angeles) right through this dream run,” exclaims the proud father Imran. “Now she is playing Tier II tennis standard and is in the mood to elevate herself into the Tier I circuit too and given her form, she is bound to produce some stunning results,” he told The Hindu before leaving to join h er in the United States. And for S.Narendranath, whom Sania looks to as the hitting partner in the City during her stay more because of his commitment and sincerity, feels that she has the game to go a long away ahead in the circuit. Amazing run
“It is an amazing run given the three-month agony she suffered because of the injury-break,” he reminds. For P.R.Raju, Chief of Officials (ITF) and a regular visitor to Wimbledon, there is a dramatic improvement in Sania’s backhand of late. “There is a lot of difference in her game from the Wimbledon she played last June. Terrific transformation indeed,” he complemented. Interestingly, B.S.Krishna Reddy, president of AP Veterans Tennis Association who saw Sania’s evolution as a star from childhood, strongly believes that the prodigy has entered the “elite orbit in the world of tennis”. “And given her run, Sania should come up with a surprise performance in US Open as her lethal forehand is a sight to behold even against the best in the world,” he explains. Will Sania do something special in US Open? Wait and see!
