Cracks in NDA show up again

Neena Vyas

This time over the Vice-Presidential election

NEW DELHI: A meeting of the parliamentary party leaders of the National Democratic Alliance on Wednesday to discuss the upcoming Vice-Presidential election, among other things, once again demonstrated lack of unity in the group as in the case of the Presidential poll last month.

The Biju Janata Dal and the Trinamool Congress Party leaders were absent and the Shiv Sena representative Manohar Joshi made it clear that the Sena’s support for the NDA candidate, Najma Heptulla, would depend on the Bharatiya Janata Party clarifying its stance on its ties with the Sena.

Later, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj told reporters that the BJD leaders would be coming here on Thursday to meet the BJP leadership.

However, she did not say anything about the Trinamool.

As for the Sena, the BJP has already made its stand clear: the problem pertaining to BJP-Sena ties could not be resolved in the next day or two -- that is, before the Vice-Presidential poll due this Friday.

The Sena would have to take its decision independently of the larger question of the relationship between the two parties.

Ties with Sena

The BJP-Sena relationship has had its ups and downs and it took a sudden turn for the worse after the Sena made it clear that it would support Pratibha Patil for President as she was a Maharashtrian.

At that time, Ms. Swaraj said the BJP would review its ties with the Sena and that process is now on, party leaders said.

Privately, BJP leaders said they would not ask the Sena to vote for Ms. Heptulla, but they hope it will. This “goodwill gesture” would be a factor in repairing the relationship.

Ms. Swaraj was critical of the United Progressive Alliance for not trying to build up a consensus for the Vice-President and hinted that if the UPA had tried to do this vis a vis the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Rehman Khan, the NDA could have supported that decision.

The Parliamentary leaders’ meeting was chaired by the Leader of the Opposition, L.K. Advani, as NDA chairperson Atal Bihari Vajpayee was unable to attend it because of ill-health, Ms. Swaraj said. NDA convener George Fernandes was away in flood-hit Bihar.

Those present included BJP president Rajnath Singh, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Jaswant Singh, Ms. Swaraj, Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav, Akali leader S.S. Dhindsa and Shiv Sena representative Manohar Joshi.

The NDA passed a resolution on the recent happenings in Goa describing the Speaker’s action restraining two MLAs of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party from casting their votes during the trust motion as “the most blatant subversion of constitutional propriety.”

Ms. Swaraj said the BJP would raise the Goa issue in Parliament and it wanted to discuss the India-U.S. nuclear deal.

The Prime Minister’s statement on converting the Line of Control to a line of peace will also be raised.
