Corrections and clarifications

>>A sentence in a report “Elders bid farewell to Shekhawat” (August 8, 2007) was: “[The former Vice-President and former Chairman of the Rajya Sabha] Mr. Shekhawat resigned on July 21 after he lost the Vice-Presid ential election to United Progressive Alliance candidate Pratibha Patil. A number of readers point out that it should have been “the Presidential election”.

  • ;Referring to a report “The time to refresh your memory is not far away!” (“Information Technology” page, August 5, 2007), a reader said that DDR2 is specified as dynamic data rate2, but it is supposed to be double data rate. It has been specified that all DDR3 boards use the P35 chipset, but boards supporting DDR3 are already available for quite some time now, featuring the 680i chipset from Nvidia. Technically, a gigabyte of memory has 1,024 megabytes, not 1,000 mb. This is actually a marketing gimmick by companies which manufacture them.

Anand Parthasarthy clarifies that DDR is indeed Double Data Rate, and not Dynamic Data Rate as stated in the news item. The published item does not claim that only the P35 chipset can work with DDR3 memory. However, it is generally recognised that it was the introduction of this chipset by Intel that is giving the “push” to DDR3 in the mass market of the PC because the Intel chip family is the market leader. The development will inevitably prod the consumer end of the industry towards switching to DDR3 in the coming months. Since the “IT” page is meant to inform lay readers rather than specialists, it names products and devices that will impact their purchase decisions.

A gigabyte was explained as having 1,000 times more memory than a megabyte, to give readers a feel for the difference, just as a terabyte is 1,000 times bigger than a gigabyte. The exact definitions flow from the fact that measures of computer size are multiples of two. But throwing in these numbers is not a great help for most readers who want to be reminded how these memory sizes compare in size.

  • ;A sentence in a report “I am grateful to Krishna Iyer: Maudany” (August 8, 2007) was: “On his [V.R. Krishna Iyer’s] advice, a senior criminal lawyer in Chennai, Varadacharya Reddiar, had brilliantly a rgued for him [Abdul Nasir Maudany] during the initial stages of the trial.” It should have been Vridachalam Reddiar.

  • ;The name of Bihar Chief Minister Mr. Nitish Kumar was left out in the caption of the photograph that went with a report “Sonia, Patil undertake aerial survey” (August 8, 2007, page 1). The error was in the early editions.

  • ;A sentence in a report “Minister pulls up contractor” (Tamil Nadu, August 7, 2007, page 4) was: “During an inspection conducted by [Tamil Nadu Social Welfare Minister] Dr. Poongothai on Monday, it was found that Ms.Vasu Farms was supplying “bullet eggs” (very small) that did not clear the quality standards.” A reader points out that it should have been “pullet eggs”. A pullet is a young female chicken, especially one less than a year old. Pullet eggs are generally small.
