DILI: East Timor’s new Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao vowed on Wednesday to improve security and bridge divisions in his nation, even as supporters of the former ruling party burned buildings to protest their exclusion from the government. Twelve persons have been wounded in days of unrest, including four U.N.officers, most by angry youths throwing stones at vehicles and setting up roadblocks of burning tires, officials said. The violence followed President Jose Ramos-Horta’s decision to hand the prime ministerial post to Mr. Gusmao, an independence hero who served as the country’s first President, as part of efforts to end a political deadlock that followed inclusive parliamentary elections in June. Mr. Gusmao was sworn in on Wednesday. He pledged to help unify his nation, which remains bitterly divided one year after a military mutiny . — AP
