India leads despite loss

NEW DELHI: India suffered a shock 1-3 loss at the hands of the Philippines but still managed to lead the field by a point after seven rounds of the World Youth (under-16) Chess Olympiad in Singapore on Wednesday.

With three rounds to go, second seed India heads the table with 20 points, one better than the Philippines, seeded 22 in the 28-team field. After Thursday’s rest day, India plays Australia I.

Seventh round: Philippines (19) bt India (20) 3-1 (Wesley So bt B. Adhiban; Karl Victor Ochoa bt R. Ashwath; Haridas Pascua bt S. Nitin; Franz Robert Grafil lost to Swayams Mishra); Switzerland (17) lost to Australia I (18) 1.5-2.5; Uz bekistan (18.5) bt Iran (16) 3-1; Hungary (16.5) drew with Turkey (16.5) 2-2; Singapore III (14) lost to Vietnam (17.5) 0.5-3.5; Hong Kong I (13.5) lost to Singapore I (17.5) 0-4.

Indonesia (17) bt Singapore II (13) 4-0; USA (15.5) bt Malaysia (14) 3-1; Iceland (14.5) drew with South Africa (14.5) 2-2; England (15) bt Sri Lanka I (13) 3-1.

Sixth round: India bt Turkey 3.5-0.5 (Adhiban bt Mustafa Yilmaz; Ashwath drew with Ogulcan Kanmazalp; Nitin bt Mert Yilmazyerli; P. Shyam Nikhil bt Burak Firat); Philippines bt Uzbekistan 2.5-1.5.

Australia I drew with Hungary 2-2; Indonesia lost to Switzerland 1-3; Malaysia lost to Iran 1-3; Singapore I bt USA 2.5-1.5; Vietnam bt England 3-1; Singapore II bt South Africa 2.5-1.5; Singapore III bt Singapore IV 3.5-0.5; Japan lost to Iceland 1.5-2.5.
