Kerala
Kerala responds to bandh calls in right earnest, in all seriousness. This was evident at the all-India hartal called by the CITU on August 8 in support of unorganised sections of labour. In most parts of the country, offices functioned normally, trading operations were not disrupted. There was no loss of working days. Here, things were much different. Even after repeated assurances from the hartal organisers that normal life would not be jeopardised in any way, people preferred to take it easy and stay indoors. Public transport buses, autorickshaws and cabs did not ply with the result that offices and educational institutions did not function normally. Prompt obedience to the hartal call is the order of the day though such protests are often organised for the most trivial cause, at the drop of a hat. Time we took a lesson or two from other States.
