It is raining reality shows on television. On Malayalam channels, two singing competitions, Star Singer on Asianet and Super Star on Amrita, are being aired now. Amrita, in fact, devotes plenty of time to reality television. It is now showing a dance competition called Super Dancer (to be followed by a version for juniors). It recently conducted another reality show called Vanitha Ratnam, in which married wome n showcased their artistic skills. The channel is now getting ready to beam an acting competition. A similar show is already on air on Asianet Plus, called Screen Test. On the popular Hindi entertainment channels too, reality television rules, with music being the main theme, of course. Indian Idol on Sony, Saregamapa on Zee and Star Voice of India on Star Plus are all attracting a lot of eyeballs at prime time. A less serious singing competition, called Bathroom Singer on the Bollywood movie channel Filmy is due to kick off later this month. Among the show’s judges is Ravi Kissen, the Bhojpuri film actor who shot into national fame after starring in Bigg Boss on Sony (modelled on Big Brother, the show which made Shilpa Shetty the most famous Indian in the U.K.). Sport is also a theme for reality shows, with ESPN Star Sports announcing its second season of Dream Job, a competition for would-be sports anchors.
