Three children of a family die of snakebite

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Three children of a family died of snakebite at Gochhabadi village in Kandhamal district on Wednesday night. Their mother, who was also stung, could be saved.

Kakara Sahani, his wife Basanti Sahani and their three sons used to live in a hut near the fields in the village. A reptile seems to have entered their hut at night and bit them when they were fast asleep.

Akash Sahani, 5, and Batash, six months, died instantaneously. Meanwhile, Kakara raised an alarm and the villagers rushed his wife and seven-year-old Muna Sahani to the district headquarters hospital at Phulbani. Despite the best of efforts, doctors could not save Muna. The condition of Basanti is stable. The villagers sought compensation for the bereaved family.

Block Development Officer of Chakapada Srinivas Behera visited the family and extended some financial help Kakara perform the last rites. Some 50 kg of rice was also given.
