Three villagers kidnapped

Special Correspondent

Maoists brand them police informers

BHUBANESWAR: Three persons were abducted by armed Maoists from two villages under Kisinda police station area of Orissa’s Sambalpur district early on Thursday.

The Maoists who were active in the interior areas of Sambalpur kidnapped the three villagers suspecting them to be police informers, police sources said.

A group of Maoists reached Talab village around 1 a.m. and asked Arjun Dehuri, owner of a grocery shop, to accompany them. Dehuri’s shop was located close to a police camp of the Orissa State Armed Police.

From Talab, the Maoists reached Kechbil village, about 10 km away, and picked up Dutiya Naik and Anti Pradhan from their houses. The extremists tied their hands to prevent them from escaping.

As a woman saw the Maoists taking away the three persons with them, the extremists also asked her to accompany them. However, they allowed her to return home after they crossed the village limits.

While leaving the village, the Maoists reportedly warned the family members of Naik and Pradhan not to inform the police about the incident.

The villagers, however, went to the nearby police camp to inform them about the abduction. Though the police launched combing in the area, there was no trace of the abducted persons till evening.

The police sought cooperation of their counterparts in the neighbouring districts to track down the extremists and the abducted villagers.
