‘Drop panchayati raj amendment Bill’

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: Activists of Gram Ganarajya Vedike, Jan Vikas Andolan, National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources and Karnataka Panchayat Hakkottaya Andolana and members of gram and taluk panchayats staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Thursday, urging the Government not to implement the Karnataka Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Act, 2007.

The Act would defeat the very purpose of introducing the Panchayati Raj system by the late Abdul Nazir Sab through the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution. He had introduced the Panchayati Raj Act for decentralisation of power, the protesters said. S.R. Hiremath, who addressed the gathering, said that the Governor was opposed to the Act and he had sent a note to the Legislative Assembly and Council in this regard.
