Chitradurga: Bharamasagar MLA H. Anjaneya has urged the Government to expedite work on the Upper Bhadra Project to provide relief to farmers of the district. Speaking at the inauguration of a scheme at Medehalli Gram Panchayat here on Thursday, he said the district was facing an acute shortage of water owing to lack of irrigation facilities and scant rainfall. He urged the Government to formulate plans to utilise water from the Netravati river for irrigation in the district. Referring to development work being undertaken in his constituency, he said he had given priority to education and had sought more funding for schools and colleges. Mr. Anjaneya said that the Government had released Rs. 2 crore to set up a first grade college in Bharamasagar and Rs. 3 crore for a Morarji Desai School. “By the coming academic year, construction work will be over,” he said. He also promised to ensure that houses were constructed for the poor. Mr. Anjaneya warned of stringent action against those found selling arrack. Zilla panchayat vice-president B. Gangadhar said that a sum of Rs. 1.3 crore had been spent by the gram panchayat for constructing box-drains, asphalted roads and drilling borewells.
