UAS scientists hold meeting with elected representatives

A seven-year

Rs. 5-crore

project ready

Government urged to allot 150 acres

of land

SAGAR: University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore, has proposed to set up a horticultural research centre here. A consultative meeting held here on Thursday considered various aspects relating to setting up of the centre.

Scientists at UAS Prabhakar Shetty, Mahabaleshwar Hegde and Eeshwar, who attended the meeting, favoured the suggestion by local MLA Beluru Gopalakrishna to establish a research centre at Sagar.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Hegde said the seven-year Rs. 5-crore project aimed at taking up research on horticultural produce. The Government had been asked to allot 150 acres of land for the purpose.

He said 110 acres of land at Yalavarti near Sagar under the Horticulture Department was ideal for the establishment of a research centre. Most of the agriculturists in the area had small land holdings and they could be persuaded to take up food processing and floriculture in view of good returns.

Mr. Hegde said the agriculturists could be trained in agro-related aspects such as green house processing and added that with the application of modern farming technologies, farmers could make agriculture more profitable.

Mr. Gopalakrishna promised that he would try to get the land under the Horticulture Department sanctioned for the establishment of the centre. If floriculture was encouraged, it would help in checking the migration of youths from rural areas to urban centres in search of jobs, he added.

Subba Rao of Bheemanakone of PCARD Bank, Executive Officer of the taluk panchayat Nagesh Naik and Devendra Beleyuru, farmer, were present.
