ADILABAD: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) Adilabad unit on August 12 will hold a protest against the Union Government’s alleged move to ‘demolish’ the age old ‘Rama setu’ or bridge that connects Rameswaram with Sri Lanka. A protest meeting will be held near the R&B guest house at NTR chowk in which speakers will shed light on the issue of demolition of the setu. President of the newly formed protest committee Kondaiah Choudary told reporters here on Thursday that the Union Government was intending to extract Thorium from the site which needed removal of the bridge that was laid during the time of Lord Rama. This amounts to hurting the sentiments of the Hindu community, he added. Large number of people belonging to the VHP in Adilabad will also take part in the protest being organised at Rameswaram on August 26, he added. Karimnagar Staff Reporter adds: At a press conference here on Thursday, VHP town president Gampa Jagan, district sanghatan secretary N. Anandam, town secretary Boga Srinivas Swamy have said that they would stage a dharna in front of Karimnagar municipal office on Sunday. Similar dharnas
Similar dharnas and protests would be organised in all mandal headquarters. They said that Sri Rama setu was the ancient bridge constructed by Lord Rama to travel to Sri Lanka. Flaying the Government decision, they said that the Archaeology department had also suggested the Government to protect the ancient and historic bridge constructed by Lord Rama.
