Allowances of local body members to be revised

Panchayats told to submit annual Plan before September 5

No development funds for local bodies that fail to finalise accounts of expenditure

Panel formed to recommend revision of honoraria

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has formed a committee to recommend revision of honoraria and allowances of members of local self-Governments.

Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty said the committee comprised the Principal Secretary (Local Self-Government), Director of Panchayats, Commissioner of Rural Development and Director of Urban Affairs.

The Minister said the Government had already decided to increase the sitting fee of non-official members in technical advisory groups from Rs. 80 to Rs. 120.

He said development funds would be denied to local self-governments that failed to finalise the summary of accounts of expenditure under the Ninth Plan and summary and project-wise expenditure under the Tenth Plan, from September. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha district panchayats, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Kochi Corporations, Thritthala block panchayat, nine municipalities and nine panchayats were yet to finalise their accounts.

He said the panchayats should submit their annual Plans for this year to technical advisory groups before September 5, and block panchayats and municipalities before September 10.

The district panchayats and corporations were to submit their plan before September 15.

Municipalities should compulsorily include projects providing for their share (10 per cent) in Integrated Housing and Slum Development Project, Basic Services to the Urban Poor and Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
