Biocon chief appointed Honorary Consul of Ireland

Bangalore: The Republic of Ireland has appointed Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairperson of the Biocon, as its Honorary Consul in Bangalore.

According to the State Protocol Officer N. Jayadeva, Ms. Shaw had requested the State Government to issue the necessary identity cards to her and sought its permission to receive dignitaries coming from Ireland at the airports in Bangalore and elsewhere. She would also do the liaison works for the European republic in Karnataka.

He said that her request had been forwarded to the Union Ministry of External Affairs for consultations and its approval for issuing the identity cards and extend facilities to her for carrying on the duties as the Honorary Consul in the city. Asked in what capacity Ms. Shaw would function in the city or whether she enjoyed any diplomatic status, Mr. Jayadeva said that she would not enjoy any official status here.

Mr. Jayadeva said that the External Affairs Ministry had already cleared the request of Japan and Germany to establish their consulates in the city. Japanese Consul-General Kazuo Minagawa, who met Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy a few months ago was assured of all cooperation from the State Government.

He said that the Ambassador of Spain had met the Chief Minister on Tuesday and exchanged his views for expanding the activities in the State. The Mexican Ambassador is also visiting the city on August 11 followed by the Mexican President’s state visit on September 11. Many foreign embassies have expressed their desire to open their trade offices in the city, which has been a hub for information technology in the country.
