JNU commutes students’ rustication orders to fines

Staff Reporter

“Punishment orders against JNUSU president, joint secretary stay”

JNUSU condemns imposition of fines on students

Took out a march against “breach” of agreement

NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University here has commuted to imposition of fines the rustication orders issued against some students for illegally confining Registrar Avais Ahmad in his staff car earlier this year.

“After they requested Vice-Chancellor B. B. Bhattacharya for reconsideration, two students have been asked to pay a fine of Rs.2,000 each, six students have been fined Rs.1,000 each and the fine earlier imposed on JNU Students’ Union general secretary Sandeep Singh has been waived off. The punishment orders against JNUSU president Dhananjay Tripathi and joint secretary Jyotsana Singh stay as they did not submit any letter of appeal,” said Proctor H. B. Bohidar.

Meanwhile, JNUSU has condemned the imposition of fines on students.

“Such punitive measures and fines are uncalled for and go against the spirit of the agreement that we signed with the administration. Our position was that no individual student must be singled out and punished for a gherao which was collectively led by the JNUSU and for which the students’ union and the University General Body Meeting collectively regretted. We will not allow individual students to bear the burden of fines for a collective protest on workers’ rights,” said Sandeep Singh.

JNUSU took out a march on the campus on Wednesday night in protest against “breach” of agreement.
