Special Correspondent

METTUR: Heavy inflows into the Stanley reservoir have forced Public Works Department (PWD) officials to discharge 1.08 lakh cusecs of water into the river course of Cauvery on Thursday evening.

The earlier occasion when the dam discharged more than one lakh cusecs was during October 2005. It released a staggering 2 lakh cusecs on a single day causing floods in Tiruchi and Delta districts.

On Thursday, 86,990 cusecs from the total of 1.08 lakh cusecs was released through the 16-vent surplus weir and the rest through Power House sluices, senior officials told The Hindu.

The dam had surplussed for the second time in one month during this irrigation season on Wednesday. The first surplus took place in July. The reservoir had surplussed 37 times so far.

At 6 pm on Thursday, the water level stood at 122.610 feet with a live storage of 97.684 tmcft. While the inflow was 95,158 cusecs, the outflow stood at 1,08,446 cusecs.
