VARANASI: A court here on Thursday acquitted controversial MLA Mukhtar Ansari in a two-decade-old case of murder of a traffic police head constable. Fast track court judge Brij Mohan Gupta passed the order acquitting Ansari and another accused Harihar Singh for lack of evidence in the case pertaining to the murder of Rajendra Singh. Mr. Singh was killed and another policeman injured in a shootout by some unidentified assailants in the Police Line premises in the year 1988. A relative of Rajendra Singh had filed an FIR naming Mr. Ansari among the accused in the murder case. Mr. Ansari, the Independent MLA from Mau (Sadar) constituency, was brought to the court on Thursday under heavy security arrangements from a Ghazipur prison for appearance. -- PTI
