Share additional costs: exporters

Staff Reporter

Only then more facilities can be provided to workers

TIRUPUR: The Tirupur Exporters Association has asked buyers and buying houses to share the additional cost to meet social obligations with regard to working condition of labourers in garment factories.

According to a release from the association, it had received a letter from a major buyer stating that there were complaints regarding working hours, contract system and maintenance of dormitory.

At the 17th annual general meeting of the association, presided over by its president A. Sakthivel, the issue was discussed.

The association members agreed to follow the maximum 60 working hours a week rule and pay ordinary wages for eight hours a day and double wages for the two hours overtime duty (not exceeding 12 hours a week). The association said that contract system was not in vogue. It categorically ruled out the existence of bonded labour.

Referring to the condition of dormitories for workers at factories, the exporters had agreed to keep them neat and clean.

The meeting resolved that “the buying community should come forward to share some of the burden of implementing socio-ecological requirements.” The buyers should share the additional costs incurred by the exporters in providing extra facilities to workers.

Concerned over the high attrition rate of skilled workforce, the association asked units to insist on producing a relieving order before recruiting a person.
