40 huts gutted, couple killed

CHENNAI: A 70-year-old-man and his wife were killed in a fire that broke out in a hutment in K.V. Kuppam on Wednesday.

Police said that about 40 huts were destroyed. The victims were identified as Ganesh and Mary (60).

Though the cause of the fire was not known immediately, public claimed that it broke out from a hut in which a woman was reportedly engaged in cooking.

Three fire tenders were deployed and the fire was put out in about an hour.

The loss was being assessed by the Tiruvottiyur police. Further investigation is on.
