Mini IT park planned

Special Correspondent

Major facility to come up before September 29

Plan to turn city into a major IT centre

Building and satellite connectivity offered

Kozhikode: In an effort to speed up the city’s development as a centre of information technology, the district administration along with various private agencies have decided to set up a mini IT park here before September 29.

Details of the arrangements to be made to turn the city into a major IT centre were discussed on Thursday at a meeting presided over by the District Collector A. Jaythilak and attended by representatives of various agencies that have come forward to expedite the city’s development as an IT centre. A building and satellite connectivity for the project have been offered by Calicut Builders Forum.

The IT project, when it becomes full-fledged, is expected to harness technical and professional talent available in the Kozhikode district for the development of the region and also to slow down if not end the exodus of young professionals in the fields of information technology, planning and development to other places in search employment.

Students from Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and National Institute of Technology (NIT) who participated in the discussions pointed out that for the IT project to be a success, facilities for professional employed by the IT companies to maintain their lifestyle would also have to be provided.

Mr. Jaythilak pointed out since it would not be realistic for the district authorities to be expected to provide these facilities, private players could be invited to set up these ventures.

Calicut Forum for IT, which was also represented at the talks, offered to set up a Mini IT Park by September 29 before the proposed Kinfra –Knowledge Park, IT Mission and IT Park to materialise, became a reality.

The Builders Forum promised to arrange for a building and satellite connectivity by the end of September.

It also offered to arrange for food outlets of well–known brands and entertainment facilities that suit the lifestyle of the young generation. The expertise and resources of the natives of Kozhikode working for leading brand names in food and entertainment business would be sought for this purpose.

Dr. Jaythilak said recreational facilities for professionals who would be working in the proposed IT facilities could also be arranged in places such as Thusharagiri.

A consortium of entrepreneurs could be formed to set up resorts.
