Bangalore: “The construction training was first given only to children of police personnel. We have now extended the training to unemployed youth from rural areas so as to bring them to the mainstream,” said Prem Shankar Meena, Inspector-General of Police and executive director of Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation Ltd. He was addressing presspersons after inaugurating a three-month training programme at the Construction Skills Training Centre here on Wednesday. Thirty youth from rural areas of Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Mysore, Davangere and Bijapur districts have been selected for the training programme. “So far, we have trained eight batches. Two batches were held in the naxal-affected areas of Agumbe and Sringeri,” he said. Mr. Meena said engineers at the centre had been directed to ask the contractors to absorb those who had completed training. “Ours is a more practical-oriented training programme. By this month-end, we plan to give training to the prisoners. Talks in this regard are on with the officials in the Prisons Department,” he said. R. Srikumar, chairman and managing director of the corporation, said the training was being imparted as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility. “By imparting construction training to the unemployed youth, we want to ensure that quality is maintained and wastage is reduced and give the youth job assurance.”
