dated August 10, 1957: Prohibition in Delhi

The Home Minister, Mr. G.B. Pant, said in the Lok Sabha on August 8 that as a result of the prohibition programme in the capital there had been an increase in illicit trade in liquor. It was so, the Home Minister added, because previously it was easier to get liquor in a legitimate way. Mr. T.C.N. Menon asked if the consumption of foreign liquor had gone down as a result of these symbolic restrictions. Mr. Pant replied that they were not symbolic, but whether the consumption had gone down or not would be known only at the end of the year. The Home Minister told Dr. Sushila Nayyar that the Government would welcome public cooperation in tackling the drink problem.
