BHUBANESWAR: Noted poet Deepak Mishra took over as president of the Orissa Sahitya Akademi here on Wednesday. Mr. Mishra, a former professor of history, penned some two dozen books that included anthologies of poems in Oriya and English, literary essays and translation.A recipient of the Orissa Sahitya Akademi award for poetry in 1975, he turned down the prestigious Sarala Samman award four years ago when he was declared a joint winner.Mr. Mishra, who was appointed president of the akademi in 2004, was reportedly reluctant to accept the offer this year as he was not happy with the restriction of the tenure to one year. “I have appealed to the government to do away with this practice of one-year appointment of presidents. It should be at least for three years since the tenure of the executive council is also for three years,” he told newsmen.Mr. Mishra said that his priority would be timely publication of ‘Konark’, the quarterly journal of the akademi.
