PUDUKOTTAI: Come August, the service organisations are busy organising functions to observe the ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ at hospitals or clinics in the towns.
The targeted group being the women with less awareness on the importance of breastfeeding, the Innerwheel Club of Pudukottai, in co-ordination with the Breast Feeding Promotion Network of India and the Rotary Clubs of Midtown, Central, Palace City, King Town and Crown City, organised awareness camps at the child care centres in and around Pudukottai.
The programmes were held at the child care centres in semi-urban areas including Iyerkulam, Ganesh Nagar, Poonga Nagar and Pazhayakovilpatti.
“Apart from the significance of breastfeeding, the harmful effects of tin food were also explained to the mothers,” said the president of the Innerwheel Club of Pudukottai, S. Anuradha.
With a view to creating awareness among men too, the spouses of young mothers were invited to the camps.
A series of competitions were held every day, and prizes were given to the winners.
At the valediction, a question-hour session was held, in which paediatricians, Sundar and Srinivasan clarified the doubts of the young mothers.
On the future projects of the Club, Ms. Anuradha said that special health camps with a focus on curing persons with symptoms of tuberculosis would be held.
