MIM’s new strategy?
Is the attack on Tasleema Nasreen by the MIM MLAs and their supporters more political than religious? The way the MIM leadership projected it attacking the West Bengal Government for giving shelter to her in Kolkata and strongly supporting the MLAs involved in the attack is being viewed by the political parties and media professionals as party’s strategy to consolidate their dwindling base in the old city. It is an open secret that the MIM has been at loggerheads with the Communist parties that have managed to create some following for themselves in the old city by taking up common man’s issues. The two parties were recently caught in war of words in the Assembly also when the MIM accused the Left parties of collecting money from poor people promising house plots. Left parties on the other side charged the MIM with exploiting religious sentiments but doing nothing for the development of community.
“MIM wanted to use her visit to create a positive image for the party,” quipped a senior journalist.
