For the proposed mini-fishing harbour at Valiathura

Project to be a Centre-State joint venture

Job opportunities for 1,000 people in allied sectors

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has issued an order sanctioning Rs.27 lakh for a feasibility study on the proposed mini-fishing harbour at Valiathura.

Thiruvananthapuram West MLA V. Surendran Pillai said the project would provide round-the-year access to the sea for fishermen. He said it would also provide job opportunities for 1,000 people in allied sectors. The fishing harbour project is proposed to be taken up as a joint venture between the State and Central Government.

Mr. Pillai said the construction of a groin to prevent coastal erosion at Poonthura was progressing according to schedule.

The Valiathura Thuramukha Samrakshana Vikasana Samithi has hailed the Government decision to carry out a feasibility study for the mini-harbour project. A meeting of the samithi here on Thursday said the construction of the harbour and its proximity to the international airport and the National Highway bypass would convert Valiathura into a major trade centre for marine products in Kerala.

The meeting decided to organise a public reception for Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, Fisheries Minister S. Sarma and other political leaders who had worked for the project.

Samithi chairman L.A. Xavier de Cruz, Jude Chandran, Melvin Vinod, J. Gireesan, Jude Sajith, Clement Rozario, Michel Varghese and Jessy Varghese participated in the meeting.
