THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An exhibition of photographs cannot restore life, of course, but the ‘Victor George-KUWJ Photo-Cartoon Fest 2007’ currently on at the Press Club hall in the city transports viewers through a medley of emotions ranging from joy and despair to elation and pride. The three-day exhibition-cum-competition inaugurated here on Thursday by Uthradam Tirunal Marthanda Varma, head of the royal family of erstwhile Travancore, features some of the selected works of the late photographer Victor George that won him several national and international accolades. Victor George, was killed in a landslip at Venniyani mala in Idukki in July 2002 while ‘chasing the monsoon.’ From the famous ‘gallery picture’ that captures the spirit of sporting excitement through the facial expressions of a spectator, to the final frame that relives the fury of nature in a landslip at Venniyani mala, taken a few hours before his death, there are over 20 of Victor’s best photographs on display. A competition to adjudge the best news photographer of the year 2006 is also organised as part of the fest. Around 50 entries from leading photographers across the State are on display.
