THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Over 100 members of the Titanium General Labour Union (TGLU), affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, have resigned from the organisation protesting against its leaders supporting the management of the State public- sector Travancore Titanium Products (TTP) in certain “anti-employee initiatives.” A statement signed by these employees said the company, after the Left Democratic Front had come to power, had been systematically taking away service benefits the employees had won through strong struggles in the past. Retirement age
The union leaders, using tact, silenced its members who started voicing protests against such moves on the part of the management, keeping in view a trade-union referendum that was to take place in the company. As soon as the referendum was completed to the advantage of the TGLU, the leaders ditched the employees and allowed the management to bring down the retirement age in the company from 60 to 58, the statement said. ‘Betrayal’
The employees who had resigned from TGLU said the union and its leaders had “betrayed the working class” through this act. They said the TTP had been working on profit for decades, paying the Government handsome dividends year after year. Despite the company achieving record levels of production and sales in 2006-07, the balance sheet indicated a loss. They alleged that the loss was purely because of “inept management and corruption.” The management was now slashing the benefits of the employees, citing the need for belt-tightening, but the officers continued to receive new benefits such as an “interim relief” in pay scales, in addition to the payment of arrears of dearness allowance, they alleged.
