Cop sent to CBI custody for allegedly taking bribe

Sub-Inspector Vipin Kumar booked under Arms Act too

NEW DELHI: The sub-inspector posted with the Paschim Vihar police station who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday for allegedly accepting a bribe was remanded to CBI custody till August 13 by a court here on Thursday.

Sub-Inspector Vipin Kumar has also been booked under the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act as the CBI purportedly seized six illegal firearms including a 9 mm pistol and about 150 gm of charas from his office.

According to a CBI release, Vipin owns a Scorpio, an Indica and a Getz car. He allegedly has a flat worth about Rs. 50 lakh in Paschim Vihar and Rs. 20 lakh was recently spent on its renovation.

The CBI registered a case against the sub-inspector after a man lodged a complaint claiming he was demanding money to facilitate the release of his relative, arrested in a cheating and forgery case, on bail. He also allegedly threatened to frame his other relatives. According to the CBI, Vipin was arrested when he was accepting Rs. 25,000 from the complainant.

The West Delhi police have initiated an inquiry into the matter. Initial findings have revealed that on August 1 a person claiming to be a CBI staffer had met the sub-inspector asking him to favour an accused in the cheating and forgery case. This led to an altercation between them, following which the sub-inspector got the incident recorded in the daily diary at the police station.
